Learning about ENERGY in Enviro Week

Our second themed day in enviro week was Energy Day which took place on Tuesday. 6OO and Mrs Abbott did a great job organising Earth Hour for the second time this year. The whole school switched off all electrical items for one hour and reflected on their energy use.

Thank you to 6OO and Mrs Abbott for their efforts!

A highlight of Green Day was the Future Spark energy trailer. This activity taught students about energy consumption and their environmental impact. Students were then able to ride the bikes to generate their own power to work the microwave and pop some delicious pop corn. During our lunch break a staff/student contest took place to see who could generate the most power. It’s fair to say the students were definitely the winners of this event, as all of the staff bikes had been abandoned by the exhausted teachers and taken over by the students after 10 minutes. We used the power generated to offset the power we used during our afternoon viewing of The Lorax.

Please leave a comment about your learning related to energy on energy day as well as on green day.

The Sustainability Fair was an amazing experience for our passionate Environmental School leaders. The day provided some exciting ideas that the school leaders are keen to implement at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School. On the day they made a pledge to support St Peter’s School and encourage all of us to be more wrapper free. Back at school they planted a small wattle out by the frog bog along as a symbol of their pledge. So far they have presented a short PowerPoint at assembly to explain why we are trying to be more conscious of our choices with the types of foods that we buy in Term Two along with talking about their experience at the Environmental Fair.

Stay tuned for a short slide show to be posted from the Northern Metropolitan Fair.

As part of their current inquiry unit ENVIRONMENTAL CRUSADERS, the year 2 students recently took part in a council run tree planting event for local schools for National Tree Day. The students travelled by bus to a new development on the boarder of Mernda and South Morang. They put in an AMAZING effort and collectively planted over 300 trees.
Great work year 2s!

On Wednesday morning Ben Coleman (St Monica’s sustainability leader) visited St Peter’s to chat with Mrs Canning about our frog pond and ways to improve it. 6RC came along and Mr Coleman shared some of his knowledge about plants, animals and habitats with us. Mr Coleman was very knowledgeable and is looking forward to returning to St Peter’s next term to work with some students to repair the pond.
