ST PETER’S TO BE WRAPPER FREE EVERYDAY

In term four St Peter’s will be having a whole school focus on learning about the impact of WASTE on the environment. As a school community we are also working towards receiving accreditation in our second module of the Resource Smart Aussi Vic Program, which is the WASTE module.

Over the past 4 years it has been an expectation at St Peter’s that all students are wrapper free on Fridays. From the start of term 4 we will move to being a wrapper free school five days a week. We ask parents to support this by ensuring that their child’s lunch box is free of any items that cannot be placed in the compost or recycle bins as we aim to reduce our rubbish sent to landfill by 50%. Any wrappers that are sent to school with students will be sent home again each day. Students will not be permitted to take wrappers into the yard at any times. Teachers will be monitoring this and discussing the importance of this action with students.

In term four St Peter’s will be having a whole school focus on learning about the impact of waste on the environment, as well as how we can reduce our waste and environmental footprint. We will be implementing actions for all staff and students to take on in order to assist in this.
This has come about as we realise the importance of our individual and collective actions. As a school community we are also working towards receiving accreditation in our second module of the Resource Smart Aussi Vic Program, which is the WASTE module.
More information regarding the actions that we will be taking on will be communicated through both the newsletter and the blog.

Don’t forget that this Wednesday, 18th September, is our first Parish walk to school day. The year 2 energy team have been working hard in thier planning with the assistance of Mrs Bzdel. The official starting point is the park on the corner of McDonalds Rd and Davisson St. The event starts at 8am with small teacher supervised groups departing frequently (of course patents, friends and other family members are welcome to walk along with us too). The last group will depart the park at 8.15am.
There will be some great prizes and certificates for participants and most importantly you will be taking action to help the environment.
We would love to see you all there.
Leave a comment and let us know if you will be joining in and why you think it’s important.

As part of our involvement in the kids teaching kids program a group of St
Peter’s students were involved in the Derrimut Primary kids teaching kids
conference today. Alyssa (5AH), Ethan (5AN), Alex (5SB), Nikishi (6RC),
Hachins (6OO) and Alan (6HS) have been working during their lunch times
over the last couple of months to investigate recycling. They planned and
delivered an informative and interactive presentation to a group of
children from other schools.
Year 3KC also attended the event as audience members. All of the children
throughly enjoyed their time learning and interacting with children from
other schools.

New Bin System Introduced

Last week some of the year 2 students delivered new coloured bins to classrooms and other areas around the school. The year 2s investigated waste as part of their current inquiry unit ‘Environmental Crusaders’. The new coloured bins are green for organic waste/compost, blue for paper and cardboard, yellow for general recyclables and black for other rubbish that will be sent to landfill. New signs are now being displayed in all classrooms and around the school as a reminder of what goes in which bin. Each class now has a green, blue and black bin; as well as a yellow bin between every 2 classrooms. There is now also access to green and yellow bins in both the piazza and prep yard. Our aim through initiatives such as these is to dramatically decrease the amount of rubbish our school sends to landfill. We hope that through actions including the new bins as well as students being wrapper free, that we will eventually produce zero landfill at St Peter’s.
Well done again to year 2 on your great work!

Enviro Week 2013 concluded with Waste Day which saw us take part in a ‘waste around the world’, expertly planned by 6RC and Miss Christie. Each class was given a famous landmark to construct using waste students had collected from home. The activity was an amazing learning opportunity as children found out about geography, team work and of course the importance of rethinking and reusing with waste to help our environment. Click the link below to see our amazing creations.
