On Thursday, 50 year 4-6 students worked with artist, Peter Day, to contribute to a sculpture as part of the ‘Love the Yarra’ project. The project is a Victorian Government initiative, supported by Melbourne Water, to raise awareness of the importance of the Yarra River. The session began with the students listening to guests from Melbourne Water discuss biodiversity and the Yarra. Students then each painted a wooden tile with their interpretation of the Yarra River. All the tiles will be collated to contribute to a sculpture that will be over 7 metres long and will be displayed at Federation Square from October 14 to 23. Some students were even interviewed by a professional videographer and will be on the big screen at Federation Square. We were very fortunate to be involved in this initiative as only four schools in Victoria were involved. St Peter’s will continue our involvement in the Love the Yarra project when a small group of students present on the pollution in the Yarra at the Kids of the Yarra, Kids Teaching Kids event on 10 October.
